Deputy Chief Vulnerability Analysis Mapping/VAM
Mr. John McHarris graduated from Syracuse University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science.  John earned a Master’s of Science (M.S.) in Forestry in 1991, with a focus on GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote Sensing at the State University of New York’s School of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. Since 2012, John has been working with the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) Rome office, on food security and vulnerability analysis.  As the Deputy Chief of WFP’s Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) group, John oversees a team of analysts working on food security and nutrition assessment, food security monitoring, and information management. Between 2010 and 2012 Mr. McHarris was a consultant for the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). From 1995 to 2010, overseas assignments with WFP ranged in location from Ethiopia, to Cairo, to Dhaka Bangladesh; mostly with a focus on food security analysis, disaster preparedness and response, and related topics.  Prior to joining WFP, from late 1991 thru mid-1995 John worked for USAID’s Famine Early Warning System (FEWS), and was based out of Washington DC as the FEWS GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Database Manager.
